Disability Rights Awareness Month

Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) in South Africa is celebrated annually from November 3 to December 3. The month is a time to reflect on how to advance the rights of people with disabilities and ensure their full integration into society.

Some initiatives the government has taken to improve the lives of people with disabilities include: Equipping public spaces, Recognizing South African Sign Language (SASL) as the 12th official language, and Creating economic opportunities.

The theme for DRAM 2024 is “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy: Creating a Disability-Inclusive Society for a Better Quality of Life”. The month-long campaign has weekly sub-themes that focus on priority areas identified by the disability sector.
Disability awareness is important for establishing inclusion for people with disabilities. Lack of knowledge, uncertainties, and stereotypes can influence attitudes towards people with disabilities.
